Question by AnatoliB: Making my website both professionally sound & maximally accessible?
For example, I have Flash and alternative content for those w/out. What other technologies should I prepared for users to lack/have disabled?

Should I validate “Markup” or “as XML”?

Is it important to give the language?

I’ve checked the site in IE 6, 7 & 8, Firefox 2 & 3, Opera and Safari. I’ll probably get Google Chrome in there too. Any important browsers/versions I’m missing?

Should I check it on a Mac and how is that possible if I only have a PC?

Any other points I’m overlooking?

(There are a lot of SEO checklists out there so I don’t need you to go too deep into that.)

Thanks!

Most certainly and fundamentally make sure your HTML and CSS validate.

For accessibility, you can add the ability to change the font size on the page itself and check that your layout still works with larger fonts if people change the font size in their browsers. Also check that the amount of contrast between the text and backgrounds is adequate and that your color schemes will still make sense to people with color vision impairment.

Given that infrastructure is not equal, do all that you can to make your site download quickly so that people without broadband can still enjoy using your site. Sounds like you are on the right track there providing a non-Flash content alternative.
